On Computers

Growing up, my father ran a small construction crew, and he taught me the power of operating powerful machinery. The first time I held an iPhone in my hand, I knew the world was forever changed — that, personal computing devices were now the most powerful machinery on the planet. The final frontier isn’t outer space, nor nuclear fusion, nor AI — the final frontier is the sociopolitical ramifications from the mass proliferation of god-like magical capabilities via personal compute devices.

On Industry Contribution

I’ve spent my professional career building software, and specifically enterprise software. It has paid the bills. The software doesn’t particularly interest me, though there is something to be said about entering flow state — which I routinely do when I write software. What’s more interesting to me are the human impacts to & from software — for example, how the structure of enterprise software systems are (usually) an encoding of the organizational communication channels.

On News

These days I’m endlessly curious about understanding systems of power, be that state or corporate. In practice, that largely means following economic, financial, and geopolitical events & projections. I’m constantly reading/watching/listening to news, but not news in the mass media sense. See here for more.

On Aptitudes

In high school, I received a perfect score of 36 in the ACT Math section, but a failed score of 23 (23/36 = 63.9%) in English. That pretty much sums up my contribution to date — which is to say, I have struggled with reading & writing but I possess a top-tier propensity to solve logic-based problems. As I’ve grown older (28 years old currently), I’ve grown a deep appreciation for English. And so, it’s an area of focus, but nevertheless worth sharing for the sake of expectations. I think, I’m a really great listener, but not a good speaker — I have the input side figured out but not so much the output side, yet. Said differently, I have high-quality ideas but I struggle to articulate & bring others along with me. I’m reminded of the quote, “if you want to go fast then go alone, but if you want to go far then go together.”

On Storytelling

I love a good story. Storytelling is a skill I’m highly tuned-in to. Over the years, I have watched a lot of movies & television, because I’m obsessed with trying to identify subtext — or, as Ben Hunt puts it, the water in which we swim. In my opinion, most people overly discount the value of Hollywood (as well as mainstream news media outlets) in its ability to influence human behavior in massive ways. In the age of information, the moral systems & hedonistic preferences among the public is the leading factor in driving outcomes.
